terranga
Teranga translated from wolof means 'hospitality'. It was a word constantly said by my dear friend Abou to describe the people of his homeland Senegal , a country I was finally able to visit in December of 2018. In my previous works I’ve spoken of the disconnect to my muslim/fulani heritage, but waking up every morning to the Azhan, being greeted with ‘Asalaam Walaikum’ and seeing women who looked like me decorated in beautiful gowns headed to the Friday prayer – I felt at home, and after a very long time, finally found myself reunited with Islam. In this project, I photograph the people who made me feel welcome on the days I would sit by the beach reflecting on my identity and what it means to me.
